Looking for a simple website provider 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 0
Hey guys!
I had an old geocities website years ago and would like to make a new website for my animation work.

I liked the old geocities website service because it was very simple and allowed you a lot of freedom in terms of how your page looked. If I remember rightly it consisted of 2 things, one was a simple html box where you could type for each page of your website and the other was a file upload library thing where you could upload all the pictures etc for your website and then write them into the html box where you wanted them on your pages.

Unfortunately the geocities website says that the accounts are no longer available and a lot of other free website services I have been trying out don't offer you the same creative freedom, it's all "choose a theme" drag and drop interfaces and I can't get my website to look how I want it with these. I've tried wix.com and weebly.com

I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction if they know of a similar service provider which enables you to simply upload your files and program your pages with html?
Any advice would be most appreciated.

So, not a proper upload-html-and-files-via.-ftp host?

No domain name?

You're probably wanting something like Google Pages, they do Geocities-style editors and whatnot. Try them out first.

Hi Andrew! Thank you very much for your help, I used Google sites like you suggested and bought the .com from the site you told me about! Google sites has a website layout tool thing that works a bit like Microsoft office for arranging your text and pictures, it also has an HTML button you can press to customise it a bit more. The only downside of this is that it only seems to allow you to program HTML in the centre of your website (if you look closely you can see the blue box where the HTML content goes in the middle.) I wonder if there is a way around this so that you can customise outside of the blue box in the centre. Ideally I wanted my website to have a frame/border like the NAMSOC website, with the title at the top and the navigation buttons/links (or in my case "cheeses" down the left hand side. I couldn't do this with Googlesites so I tried to create a "frame" by using a background image in the centre which made it look as though there was a frame/border around the website.
Here's the site so far if you would like a look:
www.thomascrookfilms.com
It still needs a lot of work but it has got some examples of my work on for employers to have a look at. I've been having a bit of trouble with the layout, it's a bit tricky trying to arrange the pictures on the page. I'm trying to put the cheese button links on the left hand side of the screen and the pictures and text in the middle but it ends up putting big gaps in! You can see on the main page that there is a big gap between the introduction text and the youtube video near the bottom because the "portfolio" cheese link icon, although it is aligned to the left hand side of the page creates a gap
I also bought www.thomascrookfilms.co.uk as it was only £5.98 for 2 years, and I thought that it would come in handy if an employer couldn't remember my website address correctly, they would still be able to find it if they typed .co.uk instead of .com by mistake!
