Online Socials? Hmmm... 5 Months ago Karma: 1
As your brand new neighbour [s]Spiderman[/s] Events Officer, my role means bringing more to the NAMSoc people in terms of fun, socializing, adventure and most importantly, the oppotunity to escape work or studies, even if it's only for a few hours.

Now, one of the ideas I've had is that of "Online Socials". The idea would be for people to meet up in games online and have a group session together every now and then. This is made possible via the online game distribution service, Steam.

Online Socials would be set up ahead of time. Whiles I'm trying for 2 months notice with monthly events, these might come up within a shorter time frame. When announced, a date will be set as well as a time, what game etc. In order to get more people involved, I'll be trying to set them up on popular/free games through Steam, thus giving more people a chance at joining in.

Events would require a Steam account to join in and possibly a microphone for added lolz. The Steam platform and Account creation (free) can be done at www.steampowered.com.

My initial plan is to have a NAMSoc event on "Team Fortress 2", a popular class based shooter with a long range of personality, in-jokes, humour and of course, many, many hats. The best part is: It's free to play. Forever. A server would be set up ahead of time and tested before games were to go ahead. Veterans, newbies and the "Poor and Irish" are welcome, as it's not supposed to be serious. Thus, the perfect game for it (being that you throw jars of urine, slap people with fish and wear bright pink top hats).

Would anyone be up for something like this every now and then? Let me hear you speak.

There is a big TF2 update tonight. Usually, these big updates cause all of Steam to slow to a hault for a few hours. Try it again tomorrow. If you have any other problems, let me know.

Having roughly 1 gb spare on my hard drive and not already owning steam, this could be a bit impossible for me

And I will NOT join a Left for Dead social. That thing left me shaking like a leaf on a warm summer night.

If I could mod the skin for a melee (Scout's fish, maybe) then sure, we can give him one.

I don't think we'd do a L4D social anyway, mainly because it's limited to only 4 - 8 players, whereas TF2 is 24. L4D2 can always be set up if people are interested in Steam, as long as 4 people are willing to play. Otherwise, if we have multiple games going on over one voice chat, it may be too much, plus it'll divide people up. I want to use games that have a bit more of a togetherness thing.

I might put up a topic elsewhere asking people about steam details and games they have (PROTIP: Rather than copy everything, you can post a link to your game library.), so we can decide on what else to do. Otherwise, we still have hats.

Steam Group is now up at http://steamcommunity.com/groups/namsoc. Invite only at the moment, so get another member of the group to let you in. Right now, I'm forever alone, so enquire about it with me. You can get my ID details and stuff from the page itself.
